The Rambo Family
The Rambo family was established in
1979 when I, as a "child bride" married David. Our first child, Kelly, was born
in 1981, followed by Scott in 1984, Jack in 1987 and Elisa in 1992. We attend a small
Methodist (but conservative) church where Dave and I are both active in leadership. we are
involved in Delanco Camp Meeting Association, where I serve on the board of directors.
Delanco exists to preach salvation; promote Scriptural holiness; strengthen and encourage
believers and promote the work of the local church. In addition to family camp meeting we
run youth camps throughout the summer, each one focusing on the same goals and purposes.
We spend a good part of every summer at Delanco.
We began home schooling in the fall of 1998 after I had read magazine articles on this
strange phenomenon. My initial reaction was "I can't do that! I need my free
time." So Kelly had gone through K and grade 1, ending that school year reading on a
4th grade level. When I asked the school what they would do for her, they replied that
they would give her more work. MORE WORK- as a child I felt I had been punished for doing
well in school because if I finished quickly I would get MORE WORK. I soon learned that I
should dawdle over my work and try not to stand out from the crowd. As a mom I did not
want that for my child. Dave and i then seriously talked about home schooling and the
final decision was that i could do at least as good a job educating our children as the
school did. We set out to try it for a year.
Well, twelve years later I can assume we are in this for the long haul! Our commitment to
home schooling grows as our children grow and we see the benefits of this life style. As
much as I appreciated home schooling Kelly, I see how it was the best choice for our boys,
particularly Jack. He has some learning disabilities that have made reading a huge
challenge. Although he was my third child in our home school I felt as inexperienced
teaching him as I did teaching Kelly. His learning style is far different from mine and he
has stretched me in every way as parent, teacher and Christian. Teaching him has taught me
much in terms of dependence on the Lord!
God has provided for us so graciously in so many ways- through years of home schooling,
through financial difficulties, through my experience with cancer and still as we depend
on Him to provide all that Kelly needs in college. We see His hand at work, in our lives
His faithfulness in the day to day needs, and His grace sufficient for all situations. I
will always be thankful that He led us through the door of academics, into home schooling.
I would have never been the Christian or the parent I am now had it not been for all I
have learned in this adventure we call home schooling.
